In 2005, the NWG decided to produce a poster. A member of the group thought it would be useful to show the different routes to women's homelessness, and the Trans-Canada Homelessness Highway: A Women's Route Map was born.
The poster was launched during the 2006 election campaign. It has since been distributed across Canada to women's centers, housing organizations, anti-poverty groups, government representatives, and Aboriginal organizations. It has been used for lobbying, teaching, and workshops on women's housing and homelessness.
This 24" x 36" map of Canada is crisscrossed by the Trans Canada Homelessness Highway, on which the capital cities of provinces and territories have been given new names like Priceyton, Clawback Valley, Low Wageville and Slum City. Brief descriptions of each city illustrate factors that contribute to women's homelessness. The Highway leads to the City of Homelessness, located where Ottawa would be. The lakes on the map are named for women who have died because of homelessness, poverty, violence and racism.
The map provides detailed information about women's homelessness, including federal, provincial and territorial policies that contribute to homelessness, and the policy changes that are needed to ensure women have access to housing that is adequate, affordable, safe and secure.
It makes an ideal teaching tool for classes at the college and university level, or for workshops.
