Carly Bowie, Human Rights and Housing Lead Caseworker |   Carly received her Social Work degree from Ryerson University with a strong emphasis in Political Science. Her focus is on bringing an anti-oppression lens to the housing sector to support tenants. She is passionate about advocating for stronger social policies in affordable housing that increase social inclusion. Carly initially joined us for a student placement and transitioned to a staff member.

Annie Hodgins, Project Manager  Annie manages CERA’s Housing Access, Stabilization and Eviction Prevention direct service program, funded by the City of Toronto. She holds a Master’s degree from York University with a focus on the history of psychology and gender history.   Annie is passionate about ensuring that legislation, policy, and services are responsive to the needs of vulnerable populations.

Nicola Mulima, Executive Director  |  Nicola Mulima is an Ontario Lawyer who was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1995 and has worked in both the public and private sector for over 20 years. Nicola has served as Executive Director and Staff Lawyer for Legal Aid Ontario community legal clinics and at the Legal Aid Ontario head office. In each of Nicola’s Legal Aid positions she served as the Housing Lead, while also practicing in several other areas of clinic law, including human rights and social assistance. Nicola also served as Legal Counsel with the Region of Peel in the areas of Housing and Commercial law and as General Counsel with World Vision Canada. Nicola has been committed to social justice and human rights issues throughout her career and has served on several boards of directors for agencies addressing issues of poverty and equality. 

Shanil Patel, Legal Student | Shanil is a law student intern from Queen’s University, and has a background in philosophy. He joined CERA to gain experience and knowledge about human rights advocacy. Shanil hopes his experience at CERA will be the first step towards a career in litigating for disadvantaged groups in Toronto.

Katie Plaizier, Project Manager | Katie has a Master’s in urban planning from the University of Toronto, where she focused on housing, homelessness, and the right to the city. In addition to supporting CERA’s direct client services, she oversees responsive community education and outreach initiatives to promote human rights in housing.
